Nicholas Francis Springman, Jr, was born to Anna (Kloewer) and Nicholas Springman Sr. on June 14, 1935, in Portsmouth, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Portsmouth, Iowa, where he also attended school.
Nick met the love of his life, Lavonne Lucille Meier, while she was waitressing at the Persia Cafe. He thought that she was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. They married August 9, 1958, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Portsmouth, Iowa.
Nick enlisted in the United States Army on February 25, 1958, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He was honorably discharged on November 24, 1959. During this time, they had their first child while still stationed in Oklahoma. To this union, three daughters were born, Deb, Connie, and Dianna. After serving, he became a lifelong farmer. He loved farming and raising cattle. He also spent time as a Lynx Seed Corn Salesman.
Nick loved to be with family and watching his daughters' sporting events. He was a competitive card player and always gave a big laugh when he won. He would play pitch with the Springmans and canasta with the Meiers. Nick spent every Saturday at the Red Oak cattle barn to buy cattle and the Dunlap sales barn most Tuesdays to sell cattle. A trip to the Dairy Queen was always included.
Nick was an International Harvester guy, no green was allowed. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the National Farmers Organization. He also served on the St. Mary's Church council. He was a huge fan of the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals. It was always best to make sure not to call during a game.
On Monday, July 22, 2024, Nick passed away peacefully at his home in Portsmouth, Iowa at the age of 89. He was preceded in death by his parents, Anna and Nicholas Springman; wife, Lavonne Springman; his siblings, Mary Ann Blum, Helen Miller, Don Springman and Joe Springman; and his grandson Dan Schimerowski.
He is survived by his daughters, Deb Schimerowski (Craig Wehr) of Park View, IA; Connie Marquardt of Dumont, CO; and Dianna Springman (Ken Blum) of Portsmouth, IA; 5 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; sisters, Frankie Anastasi of Harlan, IA; Theresa Blum of Harlan, IA.
