Norma Louise Madsen Arnvig, daughter of John and Louise Petersen Madsen was born on May 12, 1924 on the family farm in Jacksonville, Iowa. Norma attended school at Jacksonville No. 2 school and then Harlan High School in 1941. She then attended Dana College and taught school in Jackson Township for six years.
Norma married Verner L. Arnvig on October 9, 1946 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Jacksonville. They made their home on the family farm where Norma remained until 1979. The union was blessed with two daughters, Judith and Carol.
Norma’s passion was caring for her family. As a farm mother, she cared for the family while Verner worked the land. It was her job to make certain meals were ready, the girls were cared for and the homestead ran smoothly. In addition to home duties, church was very important to Norma who was a lifelong member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church.
Norma died on Tuesday, May 9, 2017 at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa, having attained the age of ninety-two years, eleven months and twenty-seven days. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Verner.
Norma is survived by her daughters, Judy and her husband, Steve “Barney” Ahrenholtz of Harlan and Carol and her husband Nicolas Flaten of Treynor, Iowa; grandchildren Nate Ahrenholtz and his wife Angie of Irwin, Iowa, Steph Ahrenholtz of Harlan, Kyle Ahrenholtz and his wife Andrea of Jacksonville, John Flaten of Okoboji, Iowa and Kathryn Flaten of Vermillion, South Dakota; nine great grandchildren and many lifelong friends.
