Norm (Norman George) Coenen, the son of Clem and Gertrude (Maiwald) Coenen, was born on May 20, 1925 in Council Bluffs Iowa. He was baptized, received first communion and confirmation at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia, Iowa. He also attended and graduated from St. Boniface Catholic School in 1943.



After high school, Norm served in the US Army (Signal Corps) from May of 1945 through December of 1946. On June 10, 1947, Norm was united in marriage to Odelia “Dee” Langenfeld at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia, Iowa. Norm had his own independent insurance agency for many years, plus spent time with State Farm and Blue Cross-Blue Shield. Upon retirement, Norm founded the "Vel-Tones" Musical Group. Using piano, keyboard and banjo, Norm and partner featured big-band, country, Latin, polka, and waltz music. Performing for birthday parties, class re-unions, county fairs, retirement and nursing homes, they played in Iowa, Missouri, and Nebraska.



Norm died surrounded by his family on September 5, 2014 at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa having attained the age of eighty-nine years, three months and sixteen days. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Rose Mary Coenen and half-brother, Duane.



Norm is survived by his wife, Dee Coenen of Woodward, Iowa, his children: Ed Coenen and his wife Marianne of Panama, Iowa; Russ Coenen of Woodward; Trudi Hartman of Pomona, California; Roger Coenen of Ankeny, Iowa; and Nancy and her husband Dave Chapline of Ogden, Iowa, ten grandsons, five granddaughters, his half-sisters: Darlene and her husband Ivo Wilwerding of Westphalia; Joan Coenen of Omaha, Nebraska; Deloris Rains and Yvonne Morfeld of Lincoln, Nebraska; nieces and nephews other relatives, and and many friends.
