Noyon Nadine Schaaf, daughter of James and Ida R. (Loy) Chandler was born on August 29, 1918 on the Loy Family farm about two miles south of Avoca while her dad was serving in the Army during World War I. After her father was discharged from the Army, her family moved to the Chandler farm two miles northeast of Hancock. She attended country school through the eighth grade and graduated from the Hancock High School where she was very active in school activities such as basketball, class plays and glee club. She was a baptized member of the Hancock Methodist Church and was active in the young peoples organizations. As a young girl, she was very active in 4-H where she won many awards on both the county and state levels.
Noyon attended Simpson College for two years where she was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority. Following college, she was employed as a secretary at the Brandes Insurance Agency in Avoca. On August 29, 1943, she was united in marriage to Mervin Schaaf. Two children were born to this union: Douglas and Janelle. After their wedding, Mervin and Noyon lived on the Schaaf family farm where they ran a hog operation until they retired in 1980. In 1994, they moved into Avoca.
Noyon was a faithful member of the Trinity Lutheran Church being very active in the women�s organizations and also served as past president. For a number of years, she was a 4-H leader and was an honorary member of the East Pottawattamie County 4-H Committee. She was also a member and past matron of the Avoca Chapter of Eastern Star; was Mother Advisor of the Avoca Chapter of Rainbow for Girls; served on the Harlan Hospital Auxiliary Board and also a member of Avoca Garden Club. She was a woman of deep religious faith, who worked hard and always cared for others. She was a conservative lady but was always very generous with her family.
Noyon died on Sunday, December 16, 2007 at Elm Crest Retirement Community, having attained the age of eighty-nine years, three months and seventeen days. She is preceded in death by her parents; her daughter Janelle Gilliland; two brothers: Dean and Norman Chandler, and her sister, Elaine Anderson.
She is survived by her husband Mervin of Harlan, Iowa; her son Doug Schaaf and his wife Judy of Seattle, Washington; son-in-law John Gilliland of Harlan, Iowa; sister Wanda Chandler of Omaha, Nebraska; two grandchildren; three great grandchildren; other relatives and many friends.
Funeral Services were held on Thursday, December 19, 2007 at 2:00 PM at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Avoca, Iowa with Pastor Dennis Reich as the clergy. Serving as casket bearers were Brent Soll, Nicholas Soll, Adam Caraher, John Gilliland, Dean Kock and Jerry Gilliland. Burial was held in the Graceland Cemetery, Avoca, Iowa.
