Ole Daniel Olson was born on February 19, 1926 in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Arthur and Magdelena (Windeshausen) Olson. He was baptized in Chicago and confirmed at St. Mary’s of the Assumption Catholic Church in Panama, Iowa. Ole attended school at St. Mary’s until the eighth grade, at which time he left school to go to work, as was common in that era.
Ole met Betty Jean Plambeck at a skating rink while he was there with another girl. It was love at first sight and on June 19, 1946 they married at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa. This union was blessed with five children: Linda, Patty, Dan, Bob and Don. Ole worked as a mechanic most of his life and also was a lineman for Harlan Municipal Utilities until his retirement in 1981.
A tinkerer at heart, Ole loved working in his shop overhauling engines, making his children’s Christmas presents, and generally just fixing things. Early in life Ole raced go-carts and built stock cars for racing. He is remembered as someone who was willing to help anyone with anything, regardless of the task at hand. Ole loved to hunt, fish and camp, but more than those, he loved spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. A firm but fair man, Ole took pride in his entire family.
Ole died on Friday, July 22, 2016 while a patient at Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa at the age of ninety years, five months and three days. He was preceded in death by sisters Viola Baker, Theresa Porter, Gladys Miller, Ethyl Eskov, and Elaine Page; and brothers, Leo Olson, Arthur Olson and Walter Olson.
Ole is survived by his wife of seventy years, Betty of Harlan; daughters, Linda Brown of Florence, Alabama and Patty and her husband Allen Cox of Harlan; sons Dan Olson of Harlan, Bob Olson and his wife Tomie of Port Isabel, Texas, and Don Olson of Spirit Lake, Iowa; fourteen grandchildren, forty great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren; sisters, Marilyn Johnson of Harlan, Ramona Yates, of Harlan, and Karen Sheffler of Harlan; brothers Kenny Olson of Harlan and Richard Olson of Harlan, many nieces and nephews and many other friends.
