Clayton attended James No. 3 country school west of Hancock through eighth grade and graduated from Shelby High School in 1940.

After his marriage to Carol, Clayton transferred his church membership from Silver Creek United Methodist west of Hancock to United Lutheran in Shelby where he continued an active role in the church serving as a deacon, serving on the church council and teaching Sunday School. Clayton loved his family and was a great husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Clayton loved to travel, camping, and mountain hiking. He was an excellent woodworker. He loved making crafts to give to others.
