Otto Carl Andersen was born on March 9, 1927 to Hans and Karla (Madsen) Andersen in Hamlin, Iowa, seven years after they had immigrated from Odense, Denmark. He was baptized and confirmed at the Hamlin Lutheran Church. He attended school at Audubon Public School in Audubon, Iowa.
On February 28, 1947, Otto and Betty Huber were united in marriage at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Jacksonville, Iowa. They were blessed with three children: Roger, Connie, and Susan.
Otto began his farming career near Jacksonville when they picked corn by hand, participated in threshing rings with the neighboring farms, and used horses and wagons. He substituted as a mail carrier and was also a seed corn salesman.
He enjoyed going to farm sales, playing cards with the coffee group at the old Greve station in Jacksonville, polka dancing with his wife, and hanging out at Burger King.
Otto died on Monday, November 10, 2014 at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan having attained the age of eighty-seven years, eight months, and one day. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Earl, and sister Ilo Mathiasen.
He is survived by his wife of sixty-seven years, Betty Andersen of Harlan, Iowa; son Roger Andersen and his wife Colleen of Harlan, Iowa; daughters Connie and her husband Paul Adams of Omaha, Nebraska and Susan Andersen of Johnston, Iowa; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; other family members and friends.
