Palmer B. Volkmann was born at Denison, Iowa, February 23, 1926, the son of Herbert John and Johanna Amolia Wiese Volkmann. He was raised in Denison where he received his education graduating from high school with the class of 1944. During World War II, from February 17, 1944 until his honorable discharge October 29, 1945, Palmer served his country in the United States Army Air Force. Upon his discharge he returned to Iowa and began farming at Vail. On March 21, 1949, Palmer was united in marriage with Ruth Heiden at Denison, Iowa. Their union was blessed with two children, Pamela and Randall. They made their home on the farm at Vail until moving to Denison in 1960. Palmer continued his farming career until retiring in 1990. Following his retirement from farming he took great pride in being the caretaker at Oakland Cemetery in Denison for 12 years. During his spare time he enjoyed camping, fishing, woodworking, square and ballroom dancing, and, for eighteen years, spending the winters at their home in Pharr, Texas. Palmer was a member of the American Legion Post 8, Denison, Iowa, and the First United Methodist Church in Denison where, through the years, he had served on the Pastor Parish Council, Worship Committee and was an usher and greeter. Palmer was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Johanna Volkmann and daughter, Pamela Law. Those remaining to cherish his memory include his wife Ruth Volkmann of Denison, Iowa; son Randall Heiden Volkmann and wife Connie of Denison, Iowa; son-in-law Benny Law of Maryville, Missouri; grandchildren: Tori Landers and husband Scott of Platte City, Missouri, Andrew Volkmann and wife Jami of Cambridge, Iowa, Jesse Volkmann of Lake View, Iowa, Mandi Ritchey of Maryville, Missouri, Luke Volkmann and fiancé Leslie Allen of Littleton, Colorado; great grandchildren: Lane, Logan and Ellie Volkmann, Mikayla and Mason Landers, Preston Ritchey and Drew Volkmann; sister Lois Gray of Tacoma, Washington; other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, April 30, 2013, at First United Methodist Church, Denison, Iowa, with the Rev. Alberta Ervin officiating. Music for the service included Eldon Hardekopf singing “On The Wings Of A Snow White Dove” and the congregation singing “Amazing Grace” and “Just A Closer Walk With Thee” with Nancy Miles serving as organist. Honorary pallbearers were Les Rath, Gene Champion, Roger Sims and Kirk Roecker. Honorary Pallbearers in Memoriam included Don Hulsebus, Lloyd Carstens, Don Bartlett, Bud Barnes and Bill Gessmann. Those serving as pallbearers were Andrew Volkmann, Jesse Volkmann, Luke Volkmann, Scott Landers, Dave Heiden, Jeff Heiden, Chris Heiden, and Dan Gray. Interment was at Oakland Cemetery, Denison, Iowa. Following the interment the family invited everyone to return to the church and join them in fellowship and a luncheon prepared and served by the United Methodist Women.
