Patrick Alan Schaben, son of Anthony and Ella Mae (Zimmerman) Schaben, was born on December 24, 1970 in Denison, Iowa. He was nicknamed “Bogey” when he was a toddler because Pat’s smile reminded his father of Humphrey Bogart. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Dow City, Iowa. Pat attended grade school in Manilla, Iowa and while growing up played baseball for the Buck Grove PeeWees. He then attended Irwin-Kirkman-Manilla High School graduating with the class of 1990.
After high school, Pat worked at the family popcorn business in Defiance, Iowa until 1997. He then drove dump trucks and redi-mix trucks for several years while living in Denison and Carroll, Iowa. He next moved to Manning, Iowa where he was a custodian at the hospital for six years until becoming disabled. Pat then made his home for the next five years in Harlan with his brother Tim. Pat enjoyed Tim’s company as Tim made him laugh a lot. In Pat’s own words, “I kind of like living with Tim, he’s a goofball.” Then he laughed, “Love Ya Tim.”
Pat really enjoyed nice cars. While in high school, he and his buddies rebuilt his blue Chevy Nova. He owned several vehicles through the years and was very meticulous with them. His favorites might have been his white Monte Carlo SS or his Olds Cutlass but he was also very proud of his red four-wheel drive pickup and his first Harley Davidson.
Pat also enjoyed listening to music daily. His favorite music was the classic rock of the 70's and 80's which included Lynyrd Skynyrd and Pink Floyd. He enjoyed building model cars and collected Hot Wheels and was excited when he found one he didn’t have yet, especially if it was an older muscle car.
Pat cherished his family and friends. Pat loved and looked up to his parents and older brothers and sisters and his nieces and nephews were always near and dear to his heart. He always had a lot of respect for his closest friends. Pat always walked with a strong spirit while confronting his health complications.
Pat died suddenly at his home in Harlan on March 14, 2014 having attained the age of forty-three years, two months and eighteen days. He was preceded in death by his dad, Tony, Jr. and his sister Marie. He will be deeply missed by his mother, Ella Mae Schaben of Harlan; his brothers and sisters: Steve Schaben and his wife Karen of Denison; Rick Schaben and his wife Laurie of Harlan; June Schaben of Harlan; Randy Schaben of Carroll; Tim Schaben of Harlan; Neil Schaben and his wife Barb of Denison; Jeanne and her husband Dick Bornhoft of Manilla; eleven nieces and nephews; fourteen great nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends.
