Paul Mathias Voggesser was born on July 30, 1926, to Mathias and Helene (Koch) Voggesser in Audubon, Iowa. He attended Atlantic Community Schools in Atlantic, Iowa, although he would say he was also a student in real life at the School of Hard Knocks.
Paul enlisted in the United States Navy on August 18, 1944 and was honorably discharged from military service on June 19, 1946.
He worked for Scyberts in Atlantic until 1949, when he was united in marriage on April 30th to Bobette "Bobbie" Hagood at the Little Brown Church in the Vale in Nashua, Iowa. The couple became parents to five children: James, Gary, Lu Anne, Lisa, and Christopher. Paul began farming with Bobbie�s dad and raising feeder cattle.
He was a member of the Iowa Cattlemen�s Association and the local Farm Bureau. He served on the Walnut Community School Board, the Peace Haven Association, and the Avoca American Legion Post No. 227.
Paul loved the family life, the family farm, and raising his children. He and Bobbie kept their focus on their home and family and thoroughly enjoyed their grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He retired in 1995 and continued to live on the family farm in Hancock, Iowa. He died in Des Moines, Iowa on Tuesday, July 19, 2011, having attained the age of eighty-four years, eleven months, and nineteen days. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Bobbie, son James, sister Dorothy, and brothers Leo and Max.
Paul is survived by his children: Gary Voggesser of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Lu Anne and her husband Jim Nielsen of Granger, Iowa, Lisa and her husband Dean Hanson of Brooklyn, New York, Christopher Voggesser and his wife Sarah of West Des Moines, Iowa and daughter-in-law Mary Voggesser of Loveland, Colorado; twelve grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; brothers Robert Voggesser of Atlantic, Iowa, Harold Voggesser and his wife Marge of Bolivar, Missouri, Roy Voggesser and his wife Ann of Denison, Iowa; and sisters-in-law Betty Voggesser of Avoca, Iowa and Roselynn Voggesser of Maryville, Missouri; other family members and friends.
Pastor Steve Lewis officiated the 10:30 AM funeral service on Friday, July 22, 2011 at Peace United Church of Christ in Walnut, Iowa. Honorary casket bearers were Paul�s grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Serving as casket bearers were Paul Harder, Charles "Chuck" Zuch, Loren Lyman, Dave Rapp, David Voggesser, and Randy Lane. Military Rites were conducted by the American Legion Post No. 227 at Oak Hill Cemetery in Hancock, Iowa.
