Phyllis M. Barr was born October 21, 1929 in Des Moines, Iowa to Francis H. and Ema D. Molyneux. She died on September 17, 2013 at the age of 83. She was united in marriage to Edward B. Barr on June 11, 1949 in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Their union was blessed with two children, Bruce Edward and Jan Marie. Phyllis started teaching at Denison Community Schools in 1969 and retired from her position in 1990, but she continued to be available as a substitute teacher until 1996. Phyllis was a dedicated member of the First United Methodist Church. She spent many years singing in the choir, which was one of her favorite things to do. She also loved making time to meet with friends and have coffee at the local shop each afternoon. She loved to travel and did so quite often, taking almost annual trips to her childhood home in Michigan and visiting attractions and friends all along the way. She also took international trips with the Crawford County Bank groups and came back with lots of mementos. Phyllis loved maintaining her home and yard, including gardening and planting flowers. She also enjoyed taking walks, baking and cooking, and spending time with friends and family. She loved animals and had a few pets throughout her life that were very spoiled. She was preceded in death by a son, Bruce E. Barr, her husband and parents. Survivors include her daughter, Jan and husband Paul Elmore of Cheyenne, Wyoming; grandchildren: Melanie and husband Silas Cromer of Grand Island, Nebraska, Shannon Marie Barr and Aaron Matthew Barr, both of Kansas City, Missouri, and one great grandson, Logan Michael Cromer; other relatives and friends.
Memorial services were held at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, September 22, 2013 at First United Methodist Church in Denison, Iowa, with the Rev. Alberta Ervin officiating. Music for the service was provided by the United Methodist Chancel Choir singing “Like a Lighthouse” , a duet by Perry Bekkerus and Pat Roush singing “When I Get Where I’m Going”, congregational hymns of “Hymn of Promise” and “Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus” with Patti Bekkerus as accompanist. The recorded recessional was “Go Rest High On That Mountain” by Vince Gill. Following the services all were invited to join the family in the church fellowship hall for a luncheon prepared and served by the United Methodist Women.
