Phyllis Maxine Miller was born on August 12, 1916 to Louis and Elsie (Pryer) Hulsebus on a farm near Defiance, Iowa. She attended Country School and graduated from Defiance High School with the Class of 1936. She attended two years at Western Hill Community College and received her associates degree in 1938.
After college, she taught school for two years before being united in marriage to Charles Miller on February 18, 1940. Four boys were born to this union: Neil, Allan, Eugene, and Lyle. Phyllis became a housewife, raising her children and helping her husband on the farm by walking beans and doing field work as needed.
Phyllis had a huge garden and loved flowers. She also loved to quilt, especially making things for her grandchildren whom she enjoyed spending time with immensely.
After Charles�s death in 2007, Phyllis became a resident of Elm Crest Retirement Community where she died on Friday, August 13, 2010, having attained the age of ninety-four years and one day. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, son Eugene, and her brother Virgil.
Phyllis is survived by her sons: Neil Miller and his wife Mary of Manilla, Iowa, Allan Miller and his wife Sue of Brownsville, Pennsylvania, and Lyle Miller and his wife MaroLee of Manilla; nine grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; other family members and friends.
Pastor Walt Bernard officiated the 10:30 AM funeral service on Friday, August 20, 2010, at the Elm Crest Retirement Chapel in Harlan, Iowa. Serving as casket bearers were Michael Miller, Patrick Miller, Kathleen Miller, Jim Miller, Jackie Regan, MaroLee Miller, Sue Miller, Jason Miller, and Martin Braun. Interment was held at the Nishnabotna Cemetery in Manilla, Iowa.
