Raymond Bengford, son of John and Nettie (Albers) Bengford, was born on May 6, 1927 in Odebolt, Iowa. He was raised on the family farm and received his education in the rural schools until he began farming with his brother. Raymond was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Councilman and Mayor for the City of Deloit.
On August 11, 1953 Raymond was united in marriage to Shirley Ann Dunbar at St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Odebolt, Iowa. Their union was blessed with six children: Cathy, Rodney, Debbie, Sharon, Alan and Cindy. They made their home in Odebolt, Iowa until moving to Deloit, Iowa in 1967.
In 1967, he was employed by the Denison Community School District as a custodian. In 1970, Raymond and Shirley purchased the Deloit Mercantile Grocery Store where Raymond helped Shirley during his free time. In 1988, Raymond retired from the Denison Community School District. Raymond enjoyed woodworking, lawnwork, traveling, feeding his squirrels and birds and spending time with his grandchildren.
Raymond passed away on Monday, June 11, 2018 at Crawford County Memorial Hospital attaining the age of ninety-one years, one month and five days. He is preceded in death by his parents, John and Nettie Bengford; his wife Shirley Bengford; brothers Leo, Joe, Lawrence and Ed; sisters Marie Pollien, Rita Tiefenthaler and Allie Bernhardt.
Those left to cherish his memory include his six children Cathy Fink of Denison, Iowa; Rodney Bengford and his wife Lisa of Harlan, Iowa; Debbie and her husband Todd Brotherson of Denison, Iowa; Sharon and her husband Bob Melby of Arion, Iowa; Alan Bengford of Denison, Iowa; Cindy and her husband Alan Ahart of Denison, Iowa; 19 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; sister Eileen and her husband Lou Cass of Carroll, Iowa; very special niece Diana Anderson; very special friend Sonia Bermudez; many other relatives and friends.
