Raynard H. Schmidt
April 12, 1933 — August 21, 2017
Raynard Herbert Schmidt, son of Frank John and Hertha (Rathje) Schmidt, was born on April 12, 1933 in Otter Creek Township in Crawford County outside of Denison, Iowa. On August 26, 1933, Raynard was baptized at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. He started school at the Otter Creek Township No. 5 rural school from kindergarten to 2nd grade and then attended Schleswig Public school from 3rd through 8th grade.
In April of 1948, Raynard was confirmed at the Friedens Evangelical and Reformed Church in Schleswig which then became the United Church of Christ. He began his farming career in Otter Creek Township outside of Schleswig where he remained for fifteen years. He then lived in Schleswig for a very short period of time. On February 28, 1968, Raynard was united in marriage to Ruth Marilyn (Algoe) Fett. After their marriage they made their home on a farm in east Boyer Township outside of Vail, Iowa.
In conjunction with farming, Raynard also worked at K & S Equipment and Christensen Welding both in Denison, Iowa. Raynard and Ruth spent seventeen winters in Arkansas where Raynard was a member of the Fairfield Bay Fire Department for fifteen years. Raynard retired from farming in 1995 but still enjoyed carpentry, repairing, restoring and collecting toy and antique tractors.
Ruth died on February 6, 2007 and after her death, Raynard remained on the farm near Vail until July 5, 2011 when he moved to Silveridge in Denison. He died on August 21, 2017 having attained the age of 84 years, 4 months and 9 days. In addition to his parents and wife, Raynard was preceded in death by his brother, Burdell and his sister-in-law Alice Schmidt.
He is survived by his step daughter, Barbara (William) Adams, Vail, IA; step-granddaughter, Melissa Adams, Vail, IA; niece Sharon (John) Hansen, Schleswig, IA; niece Nancy (Charlie) Ertz, Vail, IA; niece Barb Rothfolk, Lakeville, MN; nephew Darrell Schmidt, Denison, IA; niece Judy (Mike) Meiners, Omaha, NE; niece Diane (Jeff) Gotto, Ute, IA; nephew Dean (Tina) Schmidt, Omaha, NE; niece Debra (Keith) Boger, Denison, IA; niece Karen (Dale) Rieck, Ankeny, IA; and nephew Delbert (Karen) Schmidt, Schleswig, IA; other relatives and friends.
