Reno Wingert Profile Photo
Reno Leroy Wingert was born on April 30, 1920 to Charles and Mary (Kohles) Wingert on their farm near Panama, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Panama where he remained a life-long member.

He attended Washington Township No. 5 Country School and through the eighth grade at St. Mary’s Catholic School in Panama.

Reno farmed with his dad and helped local farmers for many years. He took over the family farm (which his dad had purchased in 1910) when his dad retired in 1953. Reno started farming with horses and later purchased an International Harvestor “H” tractor with steel wheels and progressed to an “M” and an 856 tractor.

He loved his small cow herd and kept a close eye on them. Reno always enjoyed farming and talking about new inventions. He farmed his entire life without a pickup truck.

Reno loved to play the harmonica and enjoyed working with his hands, from whittling to using a turning lathe that he had made himself. He was always creating new tools to help make farming a little bit easier.

He loved to read books and magazines on a variety of subjects. He had a love of fruit trees and would graft limbs to try and create new varieties.

Reno retired from farming in 1992. In 2001, he moved into the Dunlap Nursing Home and in November of 2011, moved to Elm Crest Retirement Home in Harlan. It was there that he died on Wednesday, March 6, 2013 having attained the age of ninety-two years, ten months, and six days. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Isadore (Stella), Louis (Virginia), and Father LaVern Wingert; and sisters Anna (Bill) Kenkel and Geralda (Harold) Klein. He is survived by twenty-five nieces and nephews; other family members and friends.
