Richard John Carroll, “Dick”, was born on December 6, 1928 to Emmet and Matilda (Stolz) Carroll in rural Panama, Iowa. He attended country school and St. Mary’s Catholic School in Panama through the eighth grade when he left school to help on the family farm.
Dick enlisted in the United States Army on September 30, 1946 and served during the end of WWII as a rifleman in Japan. He earned an honorable discharge on February 20, 1948.
On August 22, 1951, he was united in marriage to Clara Bruck at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa. They became parents to seven children: Steven, Diane, Mary, Rick, Colleen, John, and Kathy.
Dick drove a truck and operated heavy equipment for different paving companies in Iowa, South Dakota, Louisiana, and Texas. After several years of traveling with his young family in a trailer, he returned to Iowa and worked for the Dallas County Secondary Roads Department until his retirement in 1990. They purchased a camper and spent their winters in Arizona and southern Texas for fifteen years.
After retirement, he also took up golf and enjoyed his time on the Harlan golf course, camping and fishing on the weekends. He was a member of the American Legion and the VFW.
Dick died on Friday, May 29, 2015 at Salem Lutheran Nursing Home in Elk Horn, Iowa having attained the age of eighty-six years, five months, and twenty-three days. He was preceded in death by his parents, son Steven who was serving in the United States Navy, sisters: Madonna Matthis, Carmen Haynes, Gladys Herbst, and Yvonne Mauer; and brothers Robert and Edward.
He is survived by his wife of sixty-four years, Clara Carroll of Harlan, Iowa; children: Diane and her husband Dr. Doug Sinn of Grapevine, Texas, Mary Barton of Omaha, Nebraska, Rick Carroll and his wife Karen also of Omaha, Colleen and her husband Kyle Kasik of Silver Spring, Maryland, John Carroll of Greeley, Colorado, and Kathy and her husband John Pritchard of Sioux City, Iowa; eighteen grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; brother Bennett Carroll and his wife Sandy of Austin, Texas; sister-in-law Mary Kay Carroll of Council Bluffs, Iowa; other family members and friends.
