Richard Allen Case was born on January 9, 1958 in Los Angeles, California. Shortly after his birth he was adopted by Irene and Dudley Case and came to live in Costa Mesa, California where he was baptized in the Catholic Church and graduated from Catholic High School.
After his graduation, Rick worked for his uncle in a Bavarian Restaurant in Tacoma, Washington for two years then became a machinist for Boeing Aircraft. During his over twenty years with Boeing, Rick worked on several different aircrafts, including the 747 used as Air Force One. His work centered around building over head compartments and custom areas. He took great pride in being an American and a member for over 20 years of his machinist union.
Because of his illness, Rick was forced to retire from Boeing and began a search for his birth mother. He was successful in his search and found his birth mother, Betty Michaelson living in Council Bluffs, Iowa. For a short time, he made his home near his mother before purchasing his own home in Corley, Iowa, south of Harlan.
His illness allowed him to live in his own home where he did some antiquing, gardening and caring for his many feline friends.
Richard died while in the care of Community Health and Myrtue Hospice at the Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan on Wednesday, October 13, 2010, having attained the age of 52 years, 9 months, and 4 days. He is survived by his adoptive mother Irene Bailey of Tacoma, Washington, his adoptive father Dudley Case of Costa Mesa, California, his birth mother Betty Michaelsen of Council Bluffs, Iowa, his son Sgt. Jeremy Case of Melelani, Hawaii, his brother Steven Michaelsen of Council Bluffs, Iowa, his sister Susan Tackett of Del Rio, Texas, sister Deborah Beck of Tacoma, Washington, a large extended family of aunts, uncles, and cousins in Tacoma, Washington and many friends in Iowa.
Graveside services were conducted on the family lot at the Grange Cemetery in Honey Creek, Iowa on Friday, October 15, 2010 at 3:00 PM. Rev. John Frost of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan officiated the Graveside Service.
