Richard Maassen Profile Photo
Richard Duane Maassen was born June 4, 1968 in Council Bluffs, Iowa to Willis and Betty (Krohn) Maassen. He was raised in Avoca, Iowa where he graduated from AvoHa Community High School in 1986. Rich received an associate’s degree from the University of Nebraska School of Technical Agriculture located in Curtis, Nebraska. While growing up, Rich was active in sports and was a lifeguard at the Avoca pool. His love of the outdoors began at the fishing pond and on his Grandma Krohn’s farm.

Rich married Allison Beth Evans on July 23, 1994 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Avoca, Iowa. They were blessed with two daughters: Olivia and Meredith. Rich and Alli made their home in rural Persia, Iowa before moving to Neola in 2013.

Rich worked at the Shelby Vet Clinic his entire career. He enjoyed working with all of God’s creatures, especially cattle. Many lasting friendships were formed with the clinic clients, and he couldn’t go anywhere without knowing somebody. He enjoyed attending Tri-Center sporting events and was an avid Iowa State fan. Rich was a hardworking man who took great pride in all that he did. He was a devoted husband and father, and he was always available for a big bear hug. His greatest joy was spending time with his daughters and attending all of their activities. He enjoyed listening to the music of Queen, drinking Coca-Cola, and teasing his daughters relentlessly.

Rich passed away on Thursday, January 18, 2018, having attained the age of forty-nine years, seven months, and fourteen days.

Rich is survived by his wife Allison; daughters: Olivia and Meredith; parents Willis and Betty of Avoca, IA; siblings Jeff (Dawn) Maassen of Hancock, IA; Bruce Maassen of Springfield, IL; Roger (Jennie) Maassen of Avoca, IA; nieces and nephews; other relatives and a huge circle friends.
