Richard Vance Penn was born in Graettinger, Iowa, on September 2, 1933, the son of George and Dolene Dunleavey Penn. He was confirmed at St. John’s Church in Clarion, Iowa. Richard attended Clarion school and graduated with the class of 1951 and went on to Loras College in Dubuque and graduated with a triple major in science, biology, and chemistry in 1955. From college Richard enlisted in the Army and served his country from 1955 to 1957.
In 1959 Richard married the love of his life, Rosemarie Storr at Sacred Heart Church in Pocahontas, Iowa. They both worked in the medical field and after working at several hospitals, they moved to Denison in 1961 and it was here that they raised their five children. Through his profession as a medical technologist at Crawford County Memorial Hospital, Richard became an expert witness of choice for Crawford County, State of Iowa, and Federal prosecutors in DWI cases. He retired from the hospital in 1996.
Richard knew that hard work paid off even in his early years. At the age of eight, he worked for Mason City Globe Gazette and bought his first war bond. He also learned the value of coupons and was an avid coupon clipper and shopped diligently for bargains. Richard was a New York Yankees fan and loved to garden. During the holidays, he could be seen enticing the family into playing cards and board games. Richard was very active in his church and served as Financial Secretary for the Knights of Columbus for thirty years.
On August 12, 2018, Richard went to his eternal home having attained the age of 84 years, 11 months, and 10 days. He passed away at the Denison Care Center in Denison. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Rosemarie, and brother Bob Penn.
Left to cherish his memory are his children: Roseann Penn of Northfield, Minnesota, Richard “Ted” Penn of Denison, Iowa, George and wife Florence Penn of Sioux City, Iowa, James and wife Jay Christie Penn of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Tom and wife Kelly Penn of Mason City, Iowa; seven grandchildren; brothers George Penn of Greeley, Iowa, and Leo and wife Lil Penn of Nevada Missouri; and sister, Margaret Penn of Dubuque, Iowa; other relatives and friends.
