ANN CATHOLIC CHURCH, VAIL, IOWA Richard Dean Smith was born in Carroll, Iowa, April 9, 1948, the son of Patricia Tigges Smith. He was raised in Carroll where he received his education graduating from Kuemper Catholic High School with the class of 1966. During the Vietnam War, from March 5, 1968, until his honorable discharge October 8, 1969, Richard served his country in the United States Army.On October 18, 1969, Richard was united in marriage with Carol Frances Ryan at St. Ann Catholic Church in Vail. Their union was blessed with three children: Shannon, Allison and Richard, Jr. They made their home in Vail and Richard owned and operated Westside Salvage in Westside, Iowa, for many years. He later was employed as an inspector for United Technologies Corporation in Carroll, Iowa, from which he retired in February of 2014.In his leisure hours Richard enjoyed spending time with the “Sugar Shack Gang”, golfing, fishing, camping, and cheering on the Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears. His most cherished times were of those spent with his children and grandchildren.He was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church in Vail, American Legion Post 65, Vail, Iowa, and the Vail Fire Department.Richard died Wednesday morning, June 10, 2015, at his home in Vail, Iowa. At the time of his death he had been blessed with 67 years, 2 months and 1 day.He was preceded in death by his stillborn son Richard Dean Smith, Jr., his mother Patricia Smith, mother-in-law Rhea Ryan and brother-in-law William Kinneally.Those remaining to cherish his memory include his wife, Carol Smith of Vail, Iowa; two daughters: Shannon and husband Michael Koenck of Vail, Iowa, and Allison Aschinger and fiancé Scott Sporrer of Dedham, Iowa; former son-in-law, Jerome Aschinger of Westside, Iowa; six grandchildren: Emily, Tanner, Carly, Makenna, Shayne and Hayden; five brothers: Frank Smith of Missouri Valley, Iowa, Gerald (Louie) Smith and wife Barb and Calvin Smith of Carroll, Iowa, Vernon Smith and wife Dixie of Fort Dodge, Iowa, and Ronald Smith of Carroll, Iowa; three sisters: Mary Jo and husband Randy Brockman of Carroll, Iowa, LuAnn and husband Joel Keairnes of Lamberton, Minnesota, and Bonnie and husband Mike Schelle of Boone, Iowa, Sisters-in-law and Brothers-in-law: Pat and husband Ron Cain of Creston, Iowa, Kathleen Kinneally of Punta Gorda, Florida, Marty Ryan and wife Stephanie of Des Moines, Iowa, Kevin Ryan of Omaha, Nebraska, John Ryan of Wisconsin, and Joe Ryan of California, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.A visitation was held at St. Ann Catholic Church in Vail from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Friday, June 12, 2015, with a Parish Vigil Service at 6:30 p.m. led by Father Paul Kelly.Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, June 13, 2015, at St. Ann Catholic Church in Vail, Iowa, with Father Paul Kelly as Celebrant. A reading entitled “A Soldier Died Today” was offered by Edward Rohner. Others participating in the mass included Servers: Rachel Gangestad and Brandon Ragaller; Lector: Marty Ryan; Gift Bearers: his grandchildren, Emily, Tanner, Carly, Makenna, Shayne and Hayden; and Eucharistic Ministers: Louie and Barb Smith and Dan C. Pfannebecker. Music for the mass was provided by St. Ann Choir singing “On Eagle’s Wings”, “Amazing Grace”, “Be Not Afraid” and “How Great Thou Art” with Irene Fielmeier serving as accompanist. Honorary pallbearers included: Ronald Cain, Scot Stoelk, Art Irlbeck, David Nelson, Steve Koch, Terry Koch, Ronald Cornelius and the “Sugar Shack Gang”, Richard Thielen, Larry Thielen, Duane Thielen, Tom Hoffman, Jim Riordan, Paul Tranter, Tom Walz, Greg Walz, Steve Lahey, Jim Clark, Ron Berger, Mike Costigan, Gary Schlerman and Edward Rohner. Those serving as pallbearers included: Phil Ruch, Bill Snyder, Darin Nelson, Jerome Aschinger, Tim Kraus and Paul Rose. Military Honors were provided by American Legion Post 65, Vail, Iowa, and Alfred Rossman American Legion Post 196, Westside, Iowa, with “Taps” played by Father Paul Kelly. Following the services, cremation rites were accorded and family inurnment will be held at a later date at St. Ann Catholic Cemetery, Vail, Iowa. Following the funeral mass and Military Honors the family invited everyone to join them in the church basement for fellowship and a luncheon provided by Lidderdale Country Store and Catering and the St. Ann Parish Team.
