Richard Dean Straw, son of Richard Lee and Alice Elizabeth (Michon) Straw, was born on October 5, 1960 in Auburn, Nebraska. While still in school, Richard decided to enter the United States Marine Corp on May 30, 1978 in Omaha, Nebraska. He later went on to receive his General Education Diploma.
On July 26, 1980, Richard was united in marriage to Cathy Ann Mitchell in Rockport, Missouri and then moved to North Carolina. They became the parents to four children: Catherine, Jessica, Kindra and Rickie. The family then moved to Nebraska City, Nebraska where Richard joined the Unites States Army National Guard serving his country until his honorable discharge on June 11, 1986.
After his discharge, Richard worked for American Meter and a few other odd jobs. In April of 1986, he was involved in a serious automobile accident that left him paralyzed. He was a natural tinkerer and loved taking things apart and putting them back together. He was good at repairing computers which he did for a local Radio Shack. He also liked to use his CB radio and was an avid HAM radio operator with his license of KP0PEM.
Richard later made his home in Irwin, Iowa and this is where he died on Saturday, March 9, 2019 having attained the age of fifty-eight years, five months and four days. He was preceded in death by his mother Alice Martinez and his sister Jane Woods.
He is survived by his children: Catherine and her husband Jorge Broca; Jessica Straw and her husband Jason Wiley; Kindra Straw and Rickie Straw and his fiancé Stephanie Clark all of Lincoln, Alabama; 18 grandchildren; his father Richard Straw of Nebraska City, Nebraska; his siblings: Susan Holm of Defiance, Iowa; Vicki Straw of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota; Denise Arnold of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Kari Warland of Fort Dodge, Iowa; Patricia Straw and Bryanna Prudhome both of Shenandoah, Iowa; Bryant Straw of Nebraska City and Ted Christiansen of Nebraska City; nieces and nephews and other relatives.
A Memorial Visitation will be held on Friday, March 15, 2019, 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Arbor Bank, 911 Central Avenue, Nebraska City, NE.
