Rick Burchett
August 20, 1946 — October 3, 2014
Richard Stephen Burchett "Rick" was born August 20th, 1946 to O. Wade and Yvonne (Roth) Burchett in Osceola, Iowa. At a young age, Rick’s family moved from Grand River, Iowa to Audubon and then to Harlan where he met his life love Cindy Pauley. Rick and Cindy graduated together from Harlan High School with the Class of 1964. He went on to attend college at Iowa State University where he was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity, a letterwinner and football coach. He graduated in 1969 with an Industrial Administration degree.
On June 29, 1968, Rick was united in marriage with Cindy at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan. To this union three children were born: Sara, Ryan and Garrett. After attending ISU, Rick went on to join the US Army where he was commissioned at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma and served until 1972. After his honorable discharge, he returned to Harlan where he worked with his father and brothers at Sta-Bilt Construction Company. Rick joined the Iowa National Guard in 1976 and served until his retirement as a Brigadier General in 2001. With nearly 30 years of service, it continued to be a fundamental piece of his life. His commitment to service continued in the community through his volunteerism in church, at community events and on numerous boards. He especially enjoyed his terms as President of Shelby County DevelopSource and President of the Harlan Golf and Country Club.
He was a man of great faith, peace, humility, love and selflessness. His foundation was his family and friends. He loved his time flying the airplane, laughing at the card table and rooting for his beloved Cyclones. Everyone was welcome at his home, his tailgate parties, deer camp or wherever he could enjoy those he treasured the most.
Rick passed away with his family at his side on Friday, October 3, 2014 at the Creighton Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska attaining the age of sixty-eight years, one month, and thirteen days. He was preceded in death by his father O. Wade Burchett.
Survivors include his wife Cindy Burchett of Harlan, Iowa; his children: Sara and her husband Tom Wilson of Lakeville, Minnesota; Ryan Burchett and wife Monica of Bettendorf, Iowa and Garrett Burchett and wife Erin of Davenport, Iowa; his mother Yvonne Burchett of Tucson, Arizona; six grandchildren: Zach and Josie Wilson; Maggie and Anne Burchett and Jana and Mitchell Burchett; his brothers and sisters: Allen Burchett and his wife Marty of Harlan; Marshall Burchett and his wife Martha of Harlan; Keith Burchett and his wife Cheryl of Harlan; Marybeth and her husband Bill Breheny of Des Moines, Iowa and Michelle Williams of Lincoln, Nebraska; nieces and nephews; other family and many friends.
