Rickey Ray Carter, son of Francis Carter and Alma Gene Reynolds, was born on November 15, 1949 in Harlan, Iowa. He attended school in Harlan and graduated with the Harlan Community High School Class of 1969.
In June of 1971, Rick was united in marriage to Sally Poldberg in Jacksonville, Iowa. They were the parents of two children: Cory and Lindy. After his marriage, Rick began working at the Oakland Beef Plant in Oakland, Iowa. When it closed, Rick drove truck for Jim’s Wholesale Meats for a short time before working at the Western Iowa Pork Plant both in Harlan. Rick then went to work with his brother Ron at the Family Bowl for a few years then at Proliant until his retirement due to health issues.
Rick spent many summers playing slow pitch softball and helped start the very first league in Harlan. He also started umpiring with his brother Ron for local softball and baseball games for many years. Rick also loved coaching baseball. He helped coach hundreds of kids while his kids were growing up and several more when his grandchildren began playing baseball where he acquired the name “Coach Grandpa.” He instilled a passion of the game into each of the kids and always tried teaching them that learning something, getting better as a team and having fun was always more important than winning. He was an avid sports fan watching several games no matter who was playing on television and also enjoyed NASCAR and bowling.
Rick died on January 17, 2014 at Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska having attained the age of sixty-four years, two months and two days. He was preceded in death by his father, Francis.
