Rita Julia Wageman was born on May 6, 1917 to Nicholas and Anna (Weihs) Gubbels on a farm southwest of Westphalia, Iowa. She was baptized, received first communion, and confirmed at St. Boniface Catholic Church and graduated from St. Boniface Catholic School with the Class of 1935.
On February 18, 1941, Rita was united in marriage to Anthony "Tony" Wageman at St. Boniface. Five children were born to them: Carol, Shirley, Janelle, Joseph, and Tim. They were married for thirty-eight years before Tony�s death at age sixty-six.
She worked as a cook for St. Boniface Catholic School from 1965 until the school closed in 1978. She also worked for several years for the Head Start program while it was in Westphalia.
Rita was a lifelong member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, the Rosary Society, Sewing Circle, and Happy Hour Club.
She moved to Omaha, Nebraska in 2000 and into the Omaha Nursing Center in 2006. It was there that she died on Thursday, November 8, 2012, having attained the age of ninety-five years, six months, and two days. She was preceded in death by her parents, Nick and Anna, her husband Tony, brothers Harry and Nick Gubbels, and sisters Edna and Marie Gubbels and Lucille Krienert.
Rita is survived by her children: Carol and her husband Marvin Coenen of Omaha, Nebraska, Shirley Trueman of Camarillo, California, Janelle and her husband Russell Hansen of Omaha, Joseph Wageman of St. Joseph, Missouri, and Tim Wageman and his wife Jenny of Monroe, North Carolina; fifteen grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; sisters Lorraine Korth and Genevieve Korth both of Randalph, Nebraska and Theresa Brincks of Adair, Iowa; other family members and friends.
Rev. John Dorton celebrated the 11:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial on Monday, November 12, 2012 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia, Iowa. Serving as casket bearers were Kent Coenen, Kevin Coenen, Justin Broberg, Jeffery Hansen, Scott Trueman, and Jason Trueman. Interment was held at St. Boniface Cemetery in Westphalia.
