Robert William Barton was born on November 5, 1929, to Raymond and Myrtle (Freeman) Barton on a farm near Hancock, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at Altamont Baptist Church where he remained a lifetime member. He began his schooling in country school near Hancock, continued at the Hancock school in town and attended country school in Cuppy’s Grove when the family moved there in 1941. He attended Harlan High School.
Robert was united in marriage to Marge Knuth on April 12, 1953 at the Presbyterian Church in Walnut, Iowa. Five children were born to them: Joan, Terry, Bruce, John, and Ruth. Robert farmed in the Cuppy’s Grove area until moving to Harlan in 1996.
In addition to being a life-long member of Altamont Baptist Church, he served as a trustee. He enjoyed wood working, playing pinochle with his friends, fishing, and being with his family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. But most of all, he enjoyed being with the love of his life, Marge.
Robert died on Monday, December 6, 2010 at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa, having attained the age of eighty-one years, one month, and one day. He was preceded in death by his parents, his son Bruce, granddaughter Brandy Chamberlain Harms; and his brothers Raymond, Don, and Harry.
He is survived by his wife of fifty-seven years, Marge Barton of Harlan, Iowa; his children: Joan and her husband Russ Chamberlain of Harlan, Terry Barton of Des Moines, Iowa, John Barton and his wife Jill of Prior Lake, Minnesota, and Ruth and her husband Dave Cooper of Des Moines; fifteen grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sister Virginia Lynch of Ogallala, Nebraska; other family members and friends.
Pastor Al Hazelton conducted the 2:00 PM funeral service on Thursday, December 9, 2010, at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa. A private inurnment will be held at Oak Hill Cemetery in Hancock, Iowa.
