Robert Eldon Juhl, son of William and Flora Mae (Dales) Juhl, was born on February 6, 1923 in Harlan, Iowa and attended country school in rural Harlan through the eighth grade. After his schooling, Bob worked on area farms until enlisting in the United States Navy on March 16, 1944. He served his country honorably during World War II which included time aboard the USS Obstructor until his discharge on April 27, 1946.
On June 19, 1944, Robert was united in marriage to Betty Lou Swensen in San Diego, California while he was on leave from the Navy. To this union six children were born: Bill, Wayne, Steve, Shari, Carol and Keith. They made their home near Harlan where Bob started out farming before moving into town and working for National By-Products where he was employed for over thirty-five years retiring as a manager in 1985.
Bob enjoyed camping and fishing with his wife, teaching all of his grandchildren how to fish and bait a hook and telling his OWN favorite story to all the grandchildren and great grandchildren on how he lost half of his one finger.
Bob died at the Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan on June 26, 2015 having attained the age of ninety-two years, four months and twenty days. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son Keith Juhl, his brothers Kenneth Juhl and William “Junior” Juhl; his sister Shirley and her husband Harold Blackwell and his daughter-in-law Lynn Juhl.
He is survived by his wife Betty Juhl of Harlan; his children: Bill Juhl and his wife Jeanette of Hampton, Virginia; Wayne Juhl and his wife Connie of Portsmouth, Iowa; Steve Juhl of Carter Lake, Iowa; Shari and her husband Mike Mauk of Phillipsburg, Missouri and Carol Wyant of Lebanaon, Missouri; twelve grandchildren; twenty-two great grandchildren; nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends.
