Robert Francis Leinen
May 20, 1938 — March 30, 2018
Robert Francis Leinen, son of Michael D. and Flora (Stinn) Leinen, was born May 20, 1938 in Portsmouth, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Portsmouth and attended St. Mary’s Catholic School, where he graduated with the class of 1956. After high school, Bob drove truck for Pat Newland and then joined the Army Reserves.
On November 28, 1964, Bob was united in marriage to Connie Bruck at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Portsmouth. After their marriage, Bob and Connie purchased their own farm outside of Persia, Iowa where they raised their six children: Rob, Darrel, Chuck, Deanna, Dennis, and Cheryl. This has been their home for fifty-three years and where Bob was at his happiest in his tractor listening to baseball games during harvest season. In addition to farming, Bob also enjoyed driving truck for years for Wilson Seeds and Henningsen Construction.
Bob loved spending time with his family, especially going to his grandchildren’s school and extracurricular activities. He also enjoyed playing cards, bowling, his grandchildren’s garden tractor pulls and looking at antique farm machinery. Bob was a man of few words but when he did talk it was always important to listen. He also liked to visit the sale barn and cracking walnuts for Connie even if it meant eating a small majority of them. He was also great with numbers while at the auctions computing the final cost in his head before the sale was even final. Most importantly he was a loving husband, dad and grandpa. He was always sneaking the kids their favorite treats while helping him in the fields as long as they didn’t tell their mom. When he had time to relax, the remote was always in his hand as he was always ready to watch a western on television.
He passed away surrounded by his loving family on Friday, March 30, 2018 at Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa attaining the age of seventy-nine years, ten months and ten days. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings Luella Hendricks, Rita Stein, Marcus Leinen, Arlene Reinig, and Arthur Leinen.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years Connie Leinen of Persia, Iowa; children Rob Leinen of Persia; Darrel Leinen and his wife Shayla of Harlan, Iowa; Chuck Leinen and his wife Kim of Portsmouth, Iowa; Deanna and her husband Randy Price of Minden, Iowa; Dennis Leinen and his wife Karla of Persia; Cheryl and her husband JD Fuhs of Underwood, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; sisters Mary Ellen Reisz of Portsmouth; Cleo and her husband Harold Lefeber of Minden; Lois and her husband Duane Book of Fort Lupon, Colorado; nieces and nephews; other family members and many friends.
