Robert Bob Mathiasen
June 24, 1927 — April 6, 2009
Robert "Bob" Charles Mathiasen, son of Edward and Hannah (Greve) Mathiasen, Sr., was born on June 24, 1927, in rural Harlan, Iowa. He attended country school until the eighth grade when he began farming after his father�s death. He continued to farm until 1983 when he moved to Minnesota where he was a realtor and remodeled homes to resell them.
In 1948, Bob was united in marriage to Vivian in Omaha, Nebraska. Three children were born to this marriage: Mike, Kathy, and Mark. They made their home in Minnesota and wintered in Arizona. After Vivian�s death in August 1995, he continued to live in Minnesota until 1996 when he moved back to Harlan.
On July 6, 1996, Bob was united in marriage to Bertilla "Tillie" at St. Michael�s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa. He later was baptized at St. Michael�s Catholic Church where he remained a member.
Bob enjoyed being outdoors and loved the soil and the farm. He never considered farming work because he had such a passion for it. He was a gentle man who liked to tease those he loved and enjoyed spending time with his family. Bob was known throughout the county for having a great garden and could always be found at the farmer�s market come fall.
Bob died on Monday, April 6, 2009, at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa, having attained the age of eighty-one years, nine months, and thirteen days. He is preceded in death by his parents and his first wife Vivian.
He is survived by his wife Tillie of Harlan, Iowa; his children: Mike Mathiasen and his wife Mary of St. Charles, Iowa; Kathy and her husband Jack Fennke of Lincoln, Nebraska; Mark Mathiasen and his wife Bev of Champlin, Minnesota; Carol and her husband Merlin Meyer and JoAnne and her husband Jerry Marsh all of Pomeroy, Iowa; fifteen grandchildren; twenty-one great-grandchildren; his siblings: Ed Mathiasen; Norman Mathiasen and his wife Jo all of Harlan; Rosemary and her husband Cy Petersen of Elk Horn, Iowa; Howard Mathiasen and his wife Mary of Apache Junction, Arizona; Ann and her husband Ron Wendt of Omaha, Nebraska; and Ron Mathiasen of Harlan; nieces; nephews; other family members and many friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Thursday, April 9, 2009, at St. Michael�s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa. Rev. Bob Hoefler celebrated the 11:00 AM service. Burial was held at Union Cemetery in Pomeroy, Iowa, at 3:00 PM, with Melvin Meyer, Shawn Marsh, Jimmy Walker, Monte Allan, Kirk Anderson and Matthew Kolberg acting as honorary casket bearers. Serving as casket bearers were Scott Meyer, Chris Mathiasen, Todd Meyer, Jason Bruck, Robert Kellogg, and Heath Marsh.
