Robert Rold
June 14, 1934 — July 17, 2019
Robert Dale Rold, the son of Christian and Esther Larsen Rold, was born on June 14, 1934 in Harlan, Iowa. He was baptized at Altamont Baptist Church where he remained an active, lifelong member. Bob attended school in Harlan, Iowa but graduated from Monrovia, California in 1952.
On June 6, 1954, Bob married Phyllis Verlee Nielsen. Five children were born to this union: Mark, Monte, Brett, Bruce and Julie. Shortly after they were married, they moved to the family farm in rural Harlan were he continued to reside until his death.
Bob started farming at an early age and continued in some form for most of his life. In addition to farming, he was a federal meat inspector from the late 60's until his retirement in 1994.
After retirement, he enjoyed fishing, wood working, gardening, working in the yard and traveling. Bob traveled to 46 states and 7 countries. Most importantly, he loved spending time with his family and the activities they were involved with, most recently watching his grandson play basketball and attending all the games.
Bob died on Wednesday, July 17, 2019 at Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn, Iowa having attained the age of eighty-five years, one month and three days. In addition to his parents, Bob is preceded in death by his wife Phyllis, two sons, Monte and Bruce, sister Vivian Goff and brother Paul Rold.
Survivors include his children: Mark Rold and his wife Becky of Elk Horn, Iowa; Brett Rold and his wife Rose of Brayton, Iowa; and Julie Rold and her fiancé Gaige Knudson of Harlan, Iowa; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; sister Ruth Thompson of Elk Horn, Iowa; loyal dog, Hazel; other relatives and many friends.
