Funeral Services: 10:30 a.m., Monday, June 15, 2015 First United Methodist Church, Denison, Iowa Visitation: 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m., Sunday, June 14, 2015 Pfannebecker Funeral Home, Denison, Iowa Roland James Talcott was born at Pisgah, Iowa May 14, 1926, to Edgar Julius Talcott and Lillian Price Talcott, and died June 10, 2015, at Lakeside Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska. At the time of his death he had been blessed with 89 years and 26 days. Roland graduated from Deloit, Iowa high school in 1943. In his senior year of high school Roland enrolled in the Navy Reserve. In 1945 he enlisted in the U.S. Marines and was taken into the Navy. He attended Naval Training School in Point Loma, San Diego, served aboard the D.E. Spangenberg 223 as a radar man, and was later honorably discharged. On March 4, 1948, Roland was united in marriage to Vera Ione Argotsinger. To this union four children were born: Maureen, Maritta, James and Patricia. Roland and Vera recently celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary. Roland and Vera farmed near Kiron and Roland carried mail on a rural route for 30 years in the Kiron, Odebolt and Arthur areas. Roland enjoyed sports in his youth, and competed in Golden Gloves boxing. He was an avid reader and also loved music, playing several instruments. He learned to play the violin at the age of 70. He played in the original Dave Huskey Band and with Damon Abbot. Roland loved planting trees and planted many starting at about age 12. Later he enjoyed planting flowers, especially roses. His hobbies also included trapping and refinishing furniture; he did many pieces for the family. Most of all, Roland loved his family. He enjoyed being with them, and enjoyed their accomplishments and successes. Roland was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Denison, Iowa, where he had served as a Trustee, a nearly 70 year member of the American Legion, and, in earlier years, had served on the Denison Community School Board, Kiron City Council and the Crawford County Extension Council. Roland was preceded in death by his parents, parents-in-law, his brother Edgar Jr., two half-brothers Russell and Alan Johnson, and his beloved daughter, Maureen Welch. He is survived by his loving wife, Vera Talcott of Omaha, Nebraska; three children and their spouses: Maritta (William) Hesson of Iowa City, Iowa, James (Kathleen) Talcott of Omaha, Nebraska, and Patricia (Michael) Lorenz of Cherry Hill, New Jersey; son-in-law: Byron Welch (Betty) of Volcano, California: 12 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; other relatives and friends.Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, June 15, 2015, at the First United Methodist Church, Denison, Iowa, with the Rev. Alberta Ervin officiating. Music for the service was provided by his granddaughters Kelsey and Shannon MacAdams singing “Amazing Grace” and Eldon Hardekopf singing “In the Garden” with Nancy Miles serving as accompanist. Pallbearers included: Jesse Swanson, Brian Talcott, David Welch, Daniel Welch, Jacob Buhrow, Keith Pedersen, Joseph Swanson and Ben Fadell. Interment was at the Dow City Cemetery, Dow City, Iowa. Following the interment the family invited everyone to return to the church and join them for fellowship and a luncheon prepared and served by the United Methodist Women.
