Rose Marie Coenen was born on August 14, 1937 to Charles Beran and Mildred Darnell in Verdigre, Nebraska at the home of her grandparents. She was baptized at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Jacksonville, Iowa, and baptized in the Catholic Church in 1958. She attended grade school in Audubon County and Jacksonville, Iowa, graduating from Harlan High School with the Class of 1955.
On February 9, 1959, Rosie was united in marriage to Clarence Coenen at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia, Iowa, where she remained a lifelong member. Four children were born to this union: Kelvin, Leann, Curtis, and Greg.
Rosie was employed with the Shelby County Farm Service Agency for over twenty years as a Program Technician, retiring in November of 1998. Her main focus was her family and she enjoyed when they all got together like they did last June. She loved to play games and was involved with anything her grandkids were involved with.
She was an excellent cook and had a huge garden that she would gather vegetables from and use in her cooking. She was a seamstress and enjoyed quilting as well as reading and talking on the phone.
Rosie had always wanted to be a nurse but was thrilled when her daughter went through school and became one.
Rosie died on Monday, March 17, 2008, at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa, having attained the age of seventy years, seven months, and three days. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Mildred Hull, her father Charles Beran, her sisters Rosalene Hardy and Carol Throlson, and her grandson Christopher Lynn Coenen.
She is survived by her husband Clarence Coenen of Westphalia, Iowa; her children: Kelvin and Christina Coenen of Modesto, California, Leann Coenen of Loveland, Colorado, Curtis and Beverly Coenen also of Modesto, California, and Greg and Donna Coenen of Omaha, Nebraska; eight grandchildren; her brothers and sisters: Larry Hull and his wife Kathy of Harlan, Iowa, Lois Eriksen of Palm Bay, Florida, Delbert Hull of Kirkman, Iowa, Mary and her husband Bill Murtaugh of Harlan, and Lita Van Cleave of Colorado Springs, Colorado; her brother-in-law Bruce Hardy of Manning, Iowa; nieces and nephews; other family members, and friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Thursday, March 20, 2008, with Rev. John Dorton celebrating the 11:00 AM service at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia, Iowa. Honorary casket bearers were Nicole Sassenberg, Marcus Longoria, Matthew Sassenberg, Danielle Coenen, Davis Coenen, Ashley Coenen, Clarence Brinker, Sadie Coenen, Jerry Gross, Christina Coenen, Beverly Coenen, and Donna Coenen. Serving as casket bearers were Kelvin Coenen, Patrick Coenen, Cristina Coenen, Greg Coenen, Leann Coenen, and Curtis Coenen. Interment was held at St. Boniface Cemetery in Westphalia.
