Rose Mary Reinig was born May 1, 1932 to Fred and Dorothy (Crowe) Schmiedeler, Sr. in Abilene, Kansas. She was baptized on May 8, 1932 at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Abilene where she also attended her first confession on June 11, 1939 and received her Holy First Communion on June 18, 1939. Rose Mary was confirmed at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Abilene, Kansas. She attended grade school at Pyke School in Abilene and later St. Joseph’s Catholic Grade School and High School in Shawnee, Kansas.



After high school, Rose Mary attended St. Scholastica Catholic College and Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas where she graduated in 1954 Cum Laude with a degree in sociology and physical education. She then taught at the Sacred Heart Academy in Wichita, Kansas for two years and taught summer school at Kansas State in Manhattan, Kansas for one summer. She was a honorary member of the Kappa Gamma Pi fraternity and went on to be a substitute teacher at St. Mary’s Grade School in Portsmouth, Iowa.



On September 1, 1956, Rose Mary was united in marriage to Leonard Leo Reinig at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Shawnee, Kansas. Leonard and Rose Mary began their life together with the establishment of their home on a farm between Panama and Portsmouth, Iowa. This was a time of great joy as the family grew to include six children. In December 1981, they moved to Harlan and the transition towards retirement in town began. Leonard and Rose Mary officially retired from farming in August 1990 which coincided with the birth of their first grandchild.



Rose Mary was a very devoted wife and loving mother and grandmother. She enjoyed reading, sewing, and quilting as well as spending time with her family. She was very active in the Catholic Church from the time she was young to her time at St. Mary’s in Panama and St. Michael’s in Harlan to the time of her Sacrament of the Sick she received on May 29, 2015 at Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn, Iowa. This is where she died on June 5, 2015 having attained the age of eighty-three years, one month and four days. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Leonard and her brother John Schmiedeler.



She is survived by her children: Joan and her husband Ralph Bruck of Harlan, Iowa; Thomas Reinig of Pueblo, Colorado; Jim Reinig and his wife Lisa of Tucson, Arizona; Teresa Reinig and her husband Bryan Cisar of Papillion, Nebraska; Rita and her husband Grant Christensen of Omaha, Nebraska and Ann and her husband Scott Mahlberg of Houston, Texas; her grandchildren: Marc Christensen, Hannah Christensen and John Christensen all of Omaha and Samuel Mahlberg of Houston; her great-grandchildren: Brayden Gordon and Jaxon Christensen both of Omaha; her brothers and sisters: Fred Schmiedeler, Jr. and his wife Ann of South Bend, Indiana, Pat Schmiedeler and his wife Peggy of Overland Park, Kansas, Dorothy and her husband Don Flake of Florissant, Missouri, and Martha Schmiedeler of Rio Rancho, New Mexico; sister-in-law Rosemary Ann Schmiedeler of Westwood, Kansas; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
