Rosemary Jacobsen was born on May 1, 1936 to Charles and Veronica (Tracy) Matthiessen in Shelby, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Neola, Iowa. She graduated from Shelby High School, where she was on the basketball team.
On June 25, 1956, Rosemary was united in marriage to Virgil Jacobsen at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Avoca, Iowa. They became parents to four daughters: Vicki, Lisa, Karla, and Monica. She was a homemaker while raising her daughters. After her husband’s sudden death in 1979, at the age of forty-four, she went to work as a waitress and then as a secretary at Immanuel Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska where she stayed until her retirement in 2009 at the age of seventy-two.
Rosemary loved her work, reading, and going to the casino. She also loved going bowling and later on, learned to bowl on the Wii. She rarely missed her favorite soap opera, “The Young and the Restless” and never left the house without her hair and make up perfectly done.
She loved to cook and was famous for her sour cream raisin pies. One of her greatest accomplishments was being able to see “The Phantom of the Opera” at the Orpheum Theater in Omaha earlier this year.
Rosemary had been a patient at Nebraska Medicine in Bellevue, Nebraska, where she died on Sunday, July 17, 2016 at the age of eighty-years, two months, and sixteen days. She was preceded in death by her husband Virgil, parents Charles and Veronica, sisters Teresa Martin, Dorothy Schechinger, and Geraldine McGinn; and brother Eugene Matthiessen.
She is survived by her daughters: Vicki Root of Omaha, Nebraska, Lisa and her husband Jim Schwery of Logan, Iowa, Karla Steele of Scottsdale, Arizona, and Monica and her husband Ron Welna of Omaha; eleven grandchildren: Matthew and Corey Root, Jaimie, Lyndsey, and Adam Schwery, Ryan, Keenan, Makayla, and Connor Steele, and Alyssa and Brianna Welna; two great-grandchildren: MuRrage Peavy and Jaila Root; brother-in-law Peter McGinn of Council Bluffs, Iowa; sisters-in-law Lois Hildebrand of Oakland, Iowa and Lois Matthiessen of Omaha; and many nieces and nephews.
