Roy Lee Fries, son of Hugo and Cloa (Kinser) Fries was born October 28, 1933 near Elliott, Iowa. His family lived in many towns in Southwest Iowa. Roy graduated from Shelby High School with the class of 1953.
He met his wife Ruth and was married in June of 1955. He received his draft notice the day he was married. He served in the United States Army for two years, eighteen month of that time he was in Germany.
Roy and Ruth were blessed with a daughter Caryl, and four sons Donald, David, Brian and Duane. After returning from the service, he lived in Harlan, Tennant and Corley. He worked at Locker Place, Cox Grain and spent 20 years at S&S Skelly Oil Station. He also spent 20 years working at Brickyard Orchard before retiring in 2003.
Roy enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He also enjoyed playing bingo and going to the casinos. He like to spend time outdoors fishing for catfish in the river and gardening.
Roy passed away on Wednesday, March 6, 2019 at Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn, Iowa, attaining the age of eighty-five years, four months and six days. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his daughter Caryl, brother Norman Fries, sisters Loretta Buck, Mary McCallum and Betty Jenni.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years Ruth Fries of Harlan, Iowa; sons Donald Fries of Harlan; David (Brenda) Fries of Denison, Iowa; Brian (Tammie) Fries of Kiron, Iowa; Duane (Nicole) Fries of Council Bluffs, Iowa; 13 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; brothers Hugh Fries of Texas; Ivan (Kathleen) Fries Irwin, Iowa; Bob (Judy) Fries of West Concord, Minnesota; sister Sue (Eldon) Bristol of Everett, Washington; many nieces and nephews; other family members and friends.
