Ruby Arlene Martin was born on October 9, 1927, to Clarence and Augusta (Jesperson) Peterson in Harlan, Iowa. She was baptized at Bethel Baptist Church in 1936. She attended Country School at Rabbit Hollow and graduated from Harlan High School with the Class of 1945.
On July 12, 1953, Ruby was united in marriage to Marvin Martin in Spencer, Iowa. They had four children: Patricia, Susan, David, and Daniel.
Ruby worked as at the Broderson Auto Shop, as a bookkeeper at Wigness Machine Shop, West Central Development and at CDS.
She remained a member at Bethel Baptist Church and then became a charter member of First Baptist Church in Harlan. She was a strong Christian woman founded in her faith. Her family was always the most important thing in her life and she loved spending time with her grandchildren and following their activities.
She enjoyed gardening and growing houseplants and occasionally having fun gambling. Her hobbies were sewing, crocheting, and needlework. The family traveled around the United States and Ruby and Marvin were able to travel after their retirement as well.
Ruby died on Saturday, February 11, 2012 at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa, having attained the age of eighty-four years, four months, and two days. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her sisters Myrtle and her husband Lyle Walker and Evelyn and her husband Clarence Fick, and her brother-in-law Earl Waddell.
She is survived by her husband of fifty-eight years Marvin Martin of Harlan, Iowa; daughters Patricia and her husband James Mortensen of Kimballton, Iowa and Susan and her husband Roger Jensen of Loveland, Colorado; sons David Martin and his wife Lois of Harlan and Daniel Martin and his wife Marilyn of Harlan; eleven grandchildren; one great-grandson; sister Viola Waddell of Harlan; other family members and friends.
Pastor Dan Hawn officiated the 11:00 AM funeral service on Tuesday, February 14, 2012 at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa. Honorary casket bearers were Mathew, Wendy, and Jamie Martin, Allen, Aaron and Andrew Jensen, Devin and Stacey Mortensen, Nathan and Brandon Martin, Kyle and Amanda Martin, and great-grandson Noah Martin. Serving as casket bearers were Lyle Walker, Jr., Andrew Sorensen, Justin Andersen, Mark Martin, Scott Andersen, Gary Brandt, Nyle Hay, and Dean Finken. Interment was held at the Harlan Cemetery.
