Russell Haas, son of Adolph and Johanna (Nielsen) Haas, was born on November 3, 1924, on a farm near Jacksonville, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Jacksonville. Russell attended school at Jackson No. 9 country school through the eighth grade. After eighth grade graduation, he began working for Earl Stewart as a farmhand in the Jacksonville area.
On November 24, 1946, Russell was united in marriage to Dorothy Ann Chipman at the United Methodist Church Chapel in Harlan, Iowa. After their wedding, they farmed near Defiance for three years. The farmstead provided little conveniences such as running water and electricity. In their early years of marriage, Russell and Dorothy enjoyed many fun evenings square-dancing. They moved to a farm north of Tennant, and then moved in 1968, to the Green Farm until their retirement. Russell was a 4-H leader and a long time member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. He enjoyed fishing and gardening was his specialty. Russ and Dorothy enjoyed many annual vacations with Raymond and Jeanette Chipman.
Russ was very diversified, not only was he a successful farmer, but he also provided medical attention to the children and grandchildren with his healing specialty medicine of mercurochrome. As a nutritionist, he helped the grandchildren understand the enjoyment of buttering saltine crackers and dipping them in his coffee for a flavorful snack. His family and farm were his life. Russ enjoyed going to the fairs and watching his children and grandchildren show livestock. He attended and supported the children in many sporting events throughout the years.
Russ retired from farming in 1999 and in 2004 moved to Harlan where he spent the rest of his years.
Russell died on Sunday, May 2, 2010, at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa, having attained the age of eighty-five years, five months, and twenty-nine days. In addition to his parents, Russell was preceded in death by his brothers James and Donald.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, of Harlan, Iowa; their children: Larry Haas and his wife Peggy of Harlan, Iowa; Ron Haas and his wife Robin of Stanton, Iowa; Cindy Haas of Perry, Iowa; Lori and her husband Brian Schaben of Kansas City, Missouri; nine grandchildren: Tyson Haas, Ian Haas, Stephanie Ochsner, Gary Burnison, Nichole Carpenter, Misty Smith, Russell Lundy, Chase and Jack Schaben; thirteen great-grandchildren; his siblings: Ruby Larsen of Maple Grove, Minnesota; Amy Gilmore of Denver, Colorado; Edna Haas of Harlan, Iowa; and John Haas and his wife Hertha of Harlan, Iowa; nieces; nephews; other family members and many friends.
