Russell Michael Sandbothe, Sr., son of Steven John and Barbara Agnus (Pauley) Sandbothe, was born on June 23, 1937, at the RR farmhouse in Panama, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary�s of the Assumption Catholic Church in Panama and attended school at St. Mary�s Catholic School in Panama.
In 1956, Russell enlisted in the United States Army where he served his country for two years. In 1958, he was honorably discharged.
On April 8, 1961, Russell was united in marriage to Karen Lee Jensen at St. Mary�s of the Assumption Catholic Church in Panama, Iowa. The couple moved to Council Bluffs, Iowa, where Russell worked two jobs at a time to support his new family, including working at Firestone and Wilson Packing House. In 1965, Russell and his family moved back to Panama where he began farming and continued to work at Wilson Packing House.
After leaving Wilson Packing House, Russell began driving truck where he enjoyed seeing some of the country. He always enjoyed sharing his traveling memories with his children and grandchildren.
In 1976, Russell and Karen went their separate ways but still remained close throughout the years.
In the mid-1980's Russell sold the farm and moved to Nebraska where he became interested in scraping and worked as a Laborer for Local 1140 Labor Union. He remained in Nebraska for about ten years before he moved back to Iowa where he continued his scraping interest.
When Russell wasn�t busy working, he enjoyed playing cards and going to auctions and sales. He also enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. Russell never really retired because he could always be found tinkering with sales and scraps
Russell was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Earling Council No. 1741, of Earling, Iowa, and the Panama Volunteer Fire Department. He was also a parishioner of St. Mary�s of the Assumption Catholic Church in Panama.
Russell was found at his home on Wednesday, November 5, 2008, having attained the age of seventy-one years and four months. He is preceded in death by his parents and his sister Bernice Klindt.
He is survived by his children: Beverly Jean Sandbothe and her significant other Thomas E. Turgeon of Omaha, Nebraska; Russell Michael Sandbothe, II and his significant other Becky Forman of Denison, Iowa; four grandchildren: Christopher William Lee Thomas Dougherty, MaryEllen Elizabeth Turgeon, Harley Starr-Lynn Turgeon, and Savannah Makayla Turgeon all of Omaha, Nebraska; his former wife Karen Lee Jensen of Denison; his brother Vernon J. Sandbothe and his wife Mary of Atlantic, Iowa; and his sisters: Clara Smith of Kansas City, Missouri; Mary Wright of Magnolia, Texas; and Bonnie Ferguson of Independence, Missouri; nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday, November 8, 2008, at St. Mary Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Portsmouth, Iowa. Rev. Leonard Kenkel celebrated the 2:00 PM service. Serving has honorary pallbearers were: Christopher W.L.T. Doughtery, MaryEllen Elizabeth Turgeon, Harley Starr-Lynn Turgeon, and Savannah Makayla Turgeon. Inurnment was held at St. Mary�s Cemetery in Portsmouth, Iowa.
