Ruth Elmerie (Gallentine) Davis, daughter of Elmer and Inez (Teeter) Gallentine, was born on March 19, 1919 in Van Cleve, IA, near Marshalltown. She attended school in Green Mountain, IA and graduated there with the class of 1936. During her grammar school years she was a 4-H member, and during her high school years she was a running center on the girls basketball team. Ruth then went on to attend college in Ames at Iowa State, graduating with a degree in Home Economics in 1940.
Shortly after finishing college, Ruth started working as a Home Economist in Marengo County where she met her future husband Joseph W Davis II. Joe was drafted into the Army, and was stationed in Pearl Harbor during the invasion. They got married on September 25, 1942 near Fort Lee, VA after Joe finished officer�s training. While Joe was in the Army for another four years, Ruth had moved back to Green Mountain and was a school teacher.
In 1946, Joe and Ruth bought a house in Avoca and had two children, Joseph W Davis III and Mary Ellen Davis. Ruth was a homemaker, and served as a volunteer for many years in and around the community. She was a member of the Avoca Garden Club, and also was a 4-H leader. Ruth was an active member of PEO, where she obtained the status of 50 year member in 1999. She also was very active with the Presbyterian Center in Omaha. Ruth also held the office of Moderator of the Presbytery of the Missouri River Valley region.
Ruth was involved in many other activities outside of the volunteer work as well. She enjoyed being in a bridge club in Avoca. Ruth also was very active with the United Church of Avoca, and the library in Avoca. Ruth and Joe also spent their free time traveling to various places around the world like Russia, Spain, Austria, England, Germany, and several trips to New Zealand. Ruth also was a member of the Red Hat Society before moving to Rolling Hills Ranch in December of 2008. In March of 2013, Ruth moved to Esprit Whispering Ridge.
Ruth died at Esprit on June 7, 2013 having reached the age of ninety-four years, two months, and twenty days. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Mary Ellen Davis; her husband, Joseph W Davis II; her brother, Richard �Bud� Gallentine; and her sister, Mary �Pat� Rasmussen.
She is survived by her son, Joseph W. Davis III; grandchildren, James W. Davis, wife Karley, John W. Davis, wife Lisa; great-grandchildren, Aryka, Kaitlynne, Jacob & Layla Davis; daughters-in-law, Mary Davis, Lynnette Carpenter; son & daughter-in-law, Everette & Sandra Carroll; honorary grandchildren, John & Maria Carroll, Patrick Carroll; and many other family members and friends.
Rev. Robert Houser officiated the 10:00 AM funeral service at the United Church of Avoca in Avoca, Iowa on Tuesday, June 11, 2013. Interment was held in the Graceland Cemetery in Avoca with James Davis, John Davis, Everette Carroll, Patrick Carroll, Tom True and Larry Petersen serving as casket bearers.
