Ruth Verlene Linton was born on June 2, 1919 to Henry and Lola (Burgett) Blakely in Harlan, Iowa. She attended Lincoln Township No. 7 country school through the ninth grade, graduating from Harlan High School. She attended Nebraska Methodist Nursing School and obtained her bachelor’s degree in nursing.
On November 30, 1947, Ruth was united in marriage to Roy Victor Linton at the First Presbyterian Church in Omaha, Nebraska. They became parents to five children: Roy II, Mike, John, Ruth, and Lola.
Ruth worked as a registered nurse at the Hamburg Hospital and Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan before joining the Shelby County Public Health nursing team where she stayed until her retirement in 1988.
Some of Ruth’s hobbies were ceramics, gardening, and sewing for her kids. She also enjoyed square dancing and traveling with her husband, as well as having an interest in wine making.
She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, board member of the Harlan Crest Home and Country Care Center, and a charter board member of the Shelby County Association for Retarded Citizens.
Ruth died on Wednesday, November 11, 2015 at Elm Crest Retirement Center in Harlan having attained the age of ninety-six years, five months, and nine days. She was preceded in death by her husband Roy, her son Roy Linton II, brothers Don and Floyd Blakely, and sister Iona Underwood.
She is survived by her children: Mike Linton and his wife Marcia of Marion, Iowa, John Linton and his wife Peggy of Fort Calhoun, Nebraska, Ruth and her husband Bobby Schaben of Harlan, Iowa, and Lola Linton also of Harlan, Iowa; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; other family members and friends.
