Ruth Ridge was born on July 20, 1916 in Worthington, Minnesota to S.C. and Luella (Baughn) Dedrick. She was baptized in Worthington, Minnesota and confirmed at Congregational United Church of Christ in Harlan, Iowa. She attended school in Worthington but graduated from Harlan High School with the Class of 1935.
On June 30, 1937, she was united in marriage to Ivan Martindale in Rockport, Missouri. To this union one daughter was born, Patricia. She owned and operated Mode O Day from 1957 to 1970.
Ruth was married to Russell Ridge on February 21, 1970. They moved to Cherokee, Iowa where she joined the Order of the Eastern Star, Daughters of the Nile, and Daughters of the American Revolution. She loved to play cards, especially bridge, and go to the casino.
In July of 1996, Ruth and Russell moved back to Harlan from Cherokee, to live at Elm Crest Independent Living a month before Russell’s death. Ruth stayed in Independent Living until January 2014 when she moved to Elm Crest Assisted living due to her eyesight failing.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her step-daughter Vicki.
Ruth is survived by her daughter Pat Schug of Denison, Iowa, stepchildren Steve Ridge of Chicago, Illinois, Robert Ridge of St. Louis, Missouri, and Debra and her husband John Hauser of Olathe, Kansas; grandchildren Jeff Nelson and his wife Penny of Harlan, Iowa; Scott Nelson and his wife Katie of Mason City, Iowa; step-granddaughter Susan and her husband Bob Lanik of Lincoln, Nebraska; great-grandchildren Shelby Nelson and her fiancé Dylan Book of Adel, Iowa; Alex Nelson of Ankeny, Iowa; Jacob and Blake Nelson of Mason City, Iowa; eleven step-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild; other family members and friends.
