Sandra Rae Mahlberg, daughter of Joseph and Irene (Leinen) Mahlberg, was born on June 30, 1945 near Earling, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and attended school at St. Joseph’s Catholic School both in Earling.
Sandy remained at home helping her parents after her schooling. She went on to work at Concerned in Harlan where she was active with several occupations for her forty plus years of employment. Family was by far the most important part of Sandy’s life and she loved the special family trips to Alaska, Oregon, Branson, Okoboji, Arkansas and Minnesota. She looked forward to the Mahlberg family reunion and reconnecting with her relatives each year. She would also spend time visiting her siblings, going shopping, playing games and going out to eat. She always helped her mother cook the family meals for the holidays and other special meals where she would serve her famous meat loaf and chili.
Sandy also enjoyed relaxing watching some of her favorite television shows including Walker Texas Ranger, Lawrence Welk and of course her favorite Christmas movies on the Hallmark Channel. Although she never married, one man definitely stole her heart, Elvis Presley. By far her favorite musical artist, she always assigned one of her siblings a specific Elvis play list to have ready for every family function. She also enjoyed coloring, doing word search puzzles and of course her all-time favorite activity, BINGO.
After the death of her father, Sandy remained at home with her mother. Always present was her contagious smile that made all those around her feel better even when she was a little ornery. After the death of her mother, Sandy made her home in Harlan at a group home where it took a little while to feel at home, while living here she loved when Deb Henrich took her to garage sales. But soon she felt right at home. She then made her home at the Rose Vista Nursing Home in Woodbine, Iowa and this is where she died on November 1, 2019. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister-in-law Linda Mahlberg.
Survivors include her siblings Darrell Mahlberg and his wife Elizabeth of Charter Oak, Iowa; Randy Mahlberg Sloan, Iowa; Terry Mahlberg of Anchorage, Alaska; Karen and her husband David Jones of Council Bluffs, Iowa: David Mahlberg and his wife Lois of Denison, Iowa; Becky and her husband Tim Haas of Omaha, Nebraska; Joe Mahlberg and his wife Kathy of Earling, Iowa; Jane and her husband Larry Boettger of Denison; Jim Mahlberg and his wife Andrea of Neola, Iowa and Kelly Mahlberg and his wife Penny of Earling; nieces and nephews other relatives and many friends..
