Saundra "Sandy" Brown
January 19, 1942 — January 20, 2014
Saundra Kay “Sandy” Brown was born on January 19, 1942 to Ernie and Kathryn (Brenton) Olson in Villisca, Iowa. She attended the Villisca Community Schools and graduated with the Class of 1959.
On June 7, 1959, Sandy was married to Richard “Dick” Brown at the Strand Lutheran Church in rural Adams County. There were four children born to them: LuAnn, Robin, Roger, and Scott.
Sandy was a stay-at-home mom and homemaker until their children were older. She then worked at various jobs in the Avoca and Wall Lake area communities retiring in 2009. She was a very caring and compassionate person at the Wall Lake Nursing Home and excelled in the role of Assistant Activities Director for the residents.
She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Avoca prior to moving to Wall Lake where she was a member of the Peace Lutheran Church and again became a member of Trinity Lutheran since just recently moving back to Avoca.
She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who always put her family first in her life. She enjoyed having her family all together and was happy to move to Avoca to be closer to them. She loved to cook, bake cookies, and collect angels. She enjoyed being outside tending to her beautiful flowers, shrubs, and lawn.
Sandy died unexpectedly on Monday, January 20, 2014, having attained the age of seventy-two years and one day. She was preceded in death by her parents, her father-in-law Russell Brown, brother-in-law Jake Tugel, and sisters-in-law Joan Brown and Kristy Ferguson.
She is survived by her husband of fifty-four years, Dick Brown of Avoca, Iowa; children: LuAnn and her husband Chris Mead of Glenwood, Iowa, Robin Andersen of Lincoln, Nebraska, Roger Brown and his wife Wendi of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Scott Brown and his wife Shelley of Underwood, Iowa; seven grandchildren: Jason Mead, Dustin Mead and his wife Kate, Joel Andersen, McKenna Brown, Zachary Brown, Logan Brown, and Lauren Brown; four great-grandchildren: Jaylee Mead, Lily Mead, Elizabeth Mead, and Lakeley Andersen; step-grandson Reece Hansen; brother Jim Olson and his wife Kay of Corning, Iowa; mother-in-law Fern Brown of Corning, Iowa; her brothers and sisters-in-law: Bob Brown and his wife Elinor, Ron Brown, Linda and her husband Tom Kleiman, Vicky Tugel, Rob Ferguson, other family members and many friends.
Pastor Eric Meissner officiated the 10:30 AM funeral service on Friday, January 24, 2014 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Avoca, Iowa. Music was provided by Shirley Pattee and Nancy Osborn. Honorary casket bearers were Don and Dorothy Nelsen, Larry and Sally Olsen, Willis and Lou Merritt, Ed and Kate Weis, Jack and Val Osborn, Ed and Elaine Mott, and Marie and the late Ben Myers. Serving as casket bearers were Sandy’s grandchildren: Jason Mead, Dustin Mead, Joel Andersen, McKenna Brown, Zachary Brown, Logan Brown, and Lauren Brown. Interment was held at Graceland Cemetery in Avoca.
