Sheila Ann Hopp was born on June 2, 1944 in Denver, Colorado, to John and Dorothy (Brown) Sweeney. She was raised in the Episcopalian Church. She attended school in Denver and graduated with the Class of 1962.
On July 20, 1963, Sheila was united in marriage to Frank Hopp. They made their home in Denver where she worked as a bookkeeper. They couple moved to the Midwest where Sheila took a job with Farm Service Co-Op as a bookkeeper in the Harlan office. After her divorce in 1979, she also held jobs at American Parts, Marguerite’s Catering, John’s Auto, and McGinn and McGinn Law Office in Council Bluffs, Iowa. She worked as a part-time bookkeeper for Performance Grading until her retirement.
One of her hobbies was knitting and she enjoyed making several different things for her family and friends. She loved animals - horses, dogs, and safari animals, especially the elephants. She enjoyed going to Botna Bend park in Hancock, Iowa, to feed the elk and buffalo. One of her favorite pastimes was racing and she would attend the Shelby County Speedway to watch her favorite racers: #80 Gary Hopp, #18 Taimon Wehr, and #80H Allan Hopp, the Nebraska Raceway Park, and other Midwest tracks, and would watch the races on television. She especially loved the “Speed” Channel.
Sheila lost her battle with cancer on Monday, February 11, 2013 at her home in rural Harlan. She had attained the age of sixty-eight years, eight months, and nine days. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her brother, Michael.
She is survived by her sister-in-law JoEllen Sweeney of Los Angeles, California; nieces and nephews: Dottie Jo Pack of Los Angeles, Gary Hopp and his wife Jodie of Harlan, Iowa, Larry Hopp and his wife Linda of Harlan, Cindy and her husband Keith Hulsebus of Harlan, Kris and her husband Jervis Sterler of Sheldon, Iowa, and special racing friends John and Elvira “Pete” Beamon of Council Bluffs, Iowa; other family members and friends.
