Sheldon Carl Howerter was born on July 4, 1928 to Ghlee and Faye (Henderson) Howerter in Cuba, Illinois. He attended Cuba schools graduating from Cuba Senior High School. Sheldon then enrolled in the University of Illinois where he received his Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Dairy Science and Animal Nutrition. While in graduate school, Sheldon was invited to participate in the Korean War. Sheldon served his country honorably until his discharge on May 19, 1954. While in the service, he served as a communications officer and achieved the rank of Major and received the National Defense Service Medal.



Upon his discharge from the Air Force, Sheldon returned to the research division of Armour and Company in Chicago, Illinois where he worked for four years. He then went to work for Dawe’s Laboratories in Chicago and traveled throughout the United States formulating animal feeds for several breeds.



Sheldon desired to leave the Chicago area and flew to Harlan, Iowa, and interviewed with Gaige Walters and Al Krogstad. He was impressed with the operation in Harlan and accepted a sales position with Squealor Feed in 1959. After a few years, he was able to buy stock in the company and became a part of management as well as ownership. In December of 1974 Sheldon was named President of The Feed Company. By this time Squealor Feed had expanded to Des Moines and Tipton, Iowa.



On May 23, 1975, Sheldon was united in marriage to Geraldine “Geri” Jacobsen at the United Methodist Church in Harlan, Iowa. In addition to a wife, Sheldon accepted into his life, Geri’s daughter Jeralyn and son Ross. His position with Squealor Feed continued until the plant was sold in 1990. Sheldon then accepted a position with International Service Corps where he assisted with crop production in several foreign countries including Poland and Lithuania. He was active in the Harlan Kiwanis Club where he held several offices, including president. His volunteer work in Kiwanis continued on the district and national level where he served as District Governor for the Iowa-Nebraska District of Kiwanis International.



After his retirement, he continued to live in Harlan where he enjoyed his interests in flying as a licensed airplane pilot flying a Piper Lance.



He died at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan on Saturday, April 12, 2014, having attained the age of eighty-five years, nine months, and eight days. He was preceded in death by his birth mother Faye, his father Ghlee, and adoptive mother, Bertha and his sister Thelma Orwig.



He is survived by his wife of nearly thirty-nine years Geri Howerter of Harlan, Iowa; daughter Jeralyn and her husband Dean Fiedler of Priest Lake, Idaho; son Ross Jacobsen and his wife Jane of Colorado Springs, Colorado; four granddaughters: Angela, Emma, Grace, and Margaret; one great-grandson Laz; other family members and many friends.
