Sherry Ann Hansen was born on December 14, 1942, to Adalene (Squires) and Art Berry in Cass County, Iowa. Sherry attended Oak Field #7 and Exira High School.
Sherry was united in marriage to Jerry Lee Hansen on January 27, 1959. They were blessed with six children: Deb, Betty, Cindy, Darli, Janie, and Jim. During their 57 years of marriage, Jerry and Sherry worked side-by-side raising their family, doing fieldwork, raising Holstein calves and Sherry was born with a natural green thumb. For numerous years, she had a huge vegetable garden which led to hours of canning and freezing. In the last few years, Sherry's pride and joy were her flower pots that lined the front steps and sidewalks. She shared her talents with others whenever possible, such as: baking and decorating cakes for special events, serving as a 4-H leader for the Monroe Merry Makers, leading the rhythm band at the Elk Horn Salem Homes and organizing events near and dear to her heart. Sherry had a passion for working with people. As an activity director at the Salem Homes in Elk Horn, her goal was to make every day brighter for elderly friends. She enjoyed volunteering her time to the Red Cross Organization and most recently the Eastbrook Cancer Care Board. For the last few decades, Sherry had the honor of serving Harlan and surrounding communities as the office manager of the Harlan Tribune. Through this position, she formed bonds of friendships that she forever cherished. In the past few years she began writing a column called, What's Cookin'. She loved seeking individuals willing to tell their story and share family recipes. Eventually, the recipes were compiled into a cookbook and she was proud of this accomplishment. She worked on her column right up until the end. Always and forever sharing her gifts with others.
At the center of her life was her Faith. Sherry's faith guided her throughout life and gave her strength in good and bad times. Her faith also led her to making Christmas a beloved holiday.
She enjoyed teaching Sunday school and Bible school, writing sermons and more importantly her love of music. Sherry played the organ for church services and on special occasions, the accordion.
Sherry passed on September 1, 2016 at Methodist Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska at age 73. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her infant daughter, Janie Marie and recently her daughter, Cindy Cockerham.
She is survived by her husband Jerry Hansen of Harlan, Iowa; children Deb and her husband Kevin Harris of Blair, Nebraska; Betty Hansen of Windsor Heights, Iowa; Darli Jo and her husband Bob Vrba of Schuyler, Nebraska; Jim Hansen and his wife Angie of Harlan; thirteen grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; brother Dallas Berry and his wife Donna of Owatonna, Minnesota; son-in-law Steve Cockerham of Altoona, Iowa; nieces and nephews; others family members and many friends.
