INTERMENT: 3:30 P.M., FRIDAY, JULY 18, 2014, AT LINCOLN TOWNSHIP CEMETERY, GRAY, IOWA. Shirley Maxine Aikman was born in El Centro, California, November 25, 1940, the daughter of Thomas and Myrtle O’Rymer Owen. She was raised in El Centro and Yuma, Arizona, where she received her education. On April 4, 1959, Shirley was united in marriage with Gene Aikman in Long Beach, California. Their union was blessed with two children: Debra and Kevin. They made their home briefly in Yuma before the service transferred Gene to Tampa, Florida. They returned to California in 1969 where they resided until moving to Omaha, Nebraska in 1972. Since 1974, Gene and Shirley have resided on their farm southwest of Denison. For several years Shirley was employed at Wal-Mart in Denison from which she retired in 2002. Shirley was a talented homemaker and enjoyed oil painting, ceramics, sewing and crafts. She was an avid reader, often reading three or four books at a time, and enjoyed her vegetable and flower gardens. Some of her most pleasurable times were those spent with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and her best friend Carol Lally. She and Gene attended Faith Wesleyan Church in Denison until it closed. Shirley died Monday evening, July 14, 2014, at Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska. At the time of her death she had been blessed with 73 years, 7 months and 19 days. Those preceding Shirley in death include her parents: Thomas and Myrtle Owen; and her father-in-law, Myron Aikman. Those remaining to cherish her memory include her husband: Gene Aikman of Denison, Iowa; one daughter: Debra and husband Curtis Janssen of Manning, Iowa, one son: Kevin Aikman and Ronda of Denison, Iowa; three grandchildren and three great grandchildren: Wade Janssen and his son Tristan of Orland Park, Illinois; Nathan Janssen and wife Stacy and their children Luke and Hailee of Arcadia, Iowa: and Derrick Janssen of Dow City, Iowa, her mother-in-law: Irene Aikman of Denison, Iowa; one brother: Jim Linn of Corona, California; one sister: Sandy Batura of Yuma, Arizona, other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at Noon, Friday, July 18, 2014, at Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison, Iowa, with Pastor Mark Kirby officiating. Music for the service was provided by Eldon Hardekopf singing “How Great Thou Art” and “Amazing Grace” and Patricia Kirby serving as organist. Pallbearers included Wade Janssen, Nathan Janssen, Derrick Janssen, John Kolln, Hans Hoffmeier and J.J. Lally. Following the funeral service all were invited to join the family at Cronks in Denison for fellowship and a luncheon. Graveside rites and burial was held at 3:30 p.m., Friday, July 18, 2014, at the Lincoln Township Cemetery in Gray, Iowa.
