Shirley Ann Hansen, daughter of Rasmus and Harriett (Nielsen) Scott, was born on October 12, 1922, in Harlan, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Jacksonville, Iowa, and attended country school in Jackson and Center Townships.
On December 18, 1940, Shirley was united in marriage to LuVerne Hans Hansen in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Three sons were born to this union: Redgie, Stephen and Monte. In 1941, Shirley and LuVerne moved to a farm in Monroe Township and in 1947, they moved to a farm in Polk Township, four miles north of Jacksonville. Shirley was a typical farm wife and worked hard alongside her husband. She also was an excellent cook and enjoyed spending time in the kitchen. In 1988, Shirley and LuVerne retired from farming and moved into Harlan.
Shirley and Luverne enjoyed wintering in warmer climates and spending time at their summer home by the lake in Minnesota.
Shirley was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Jacksonville where she was active in the church circle.
Shirley died on Sunday, August 23, 2009, at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa, having attained the age of eighty-six years, ten months and eleven days. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband LuVerne; her brother Paul and her sister Margaret Pauley.
She is survived by her sons: Redgie Hansen and his wife Janelle of Scottsdale, Arizona; Stephen Hansen of Kirkman, Iowa; and Monte Hansen and his wife Marcia of Kirkman, Iowa; two grandchildren; her brother Norman Scott of Manilla, Iowa; nieces; nephews; other family members and many friends.
Funeral Services were held on Thursday, August 27, 2009, at 11:00 AM at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Jacksonville, Iowa, with Pastor Ron Rasmussen officiating. Inurment was held at Jacksonville Cemetery in Jacksonville.
