Shirley Lou Nihsen was born on March 23, 1935 to Henry and Gerda (Hite) Groene in Meta, Missouri. At a young age, the family moved to Hooper, Nebraska where Shirley started country school. She graduated from Hooper High School with the Class of 1953. She went on to business school training and worked for United Airlines Reservations out of Omaha, Nebraska.



She met Harley Nihsen at the "Music Box" dance hall in Omaha. They were married on her birthday, March 23, 1958 in Winslow, Nebraska. There were four children born to them: Ronald, Marsha, Carol, and Amy. After their marriage, they farmed near Persia before they settled on their present farm near Minden in 1967.



Shirley enjoyed being a homemaker, raising her children, and helping her husband on the farm. She was a caretaker for both her parents and her husband's parents, was a member of the Minden Coffee Club, and enjoyed dancing. She was a long-time member of the Minden United Church of Christ and served in different capacities there.



Shirley died unexpectedly at her home on Wednesday, April 16, 2014, having attained the age of seventy-nine years and twenty-four days. She was preceded in death by her parents.



She will be missed by her husband Harley Nihsen of Minden, Iowa; children: Ronald Nihsen and his wife Denise of Avoca, Iowa, Marsha and her husband Arlan Darrington of Neola, Iowa, Carol Nihsen of Minden, Iowa, and Amy and her husband Rick Miller of Phoenix, Arizona; four grandchildren: Mandy and her husband Derek Johnson, Veronica Nihsen, Nicole Darrington, and Adam Nihsen; three step-grandchildren: Shawn Darrington and his wife Katie, Scott Darrington and his wife Sara, and Cory Darrington and his wife Abby; one great-grandson, Elias Harley Johnson; five step-great-grandchildren: Lexie, Kinsley, Thomas, Easton, and Avett; other family members and many friends.
