Signe Madsen was born on December 16, 1918 to Hans and Karen (Mikkelsen) Andersen in Tolstrup, Denmark. On November 17, 1940, Signe was united in marriage to Moller Madsen in their home country of Denmark. There were two children born to them: Kjeld and Elsebeth. In 1949, Signe immigrated with her husband and children to the United States where they engaged in farming until the death of her husband in 1962.

She attended grade school in Denmark an after she obtained her GED in America, she worked as a nurse’s aide to allow her to attend Iowa Western Community College. She passed the Boards Examination for a degree in Licensed Practical Nursing with the highest score in the State of Iowa. Signe had a rewarding and successful career as an LPN in the Harlan Hospital and also volunteered many hours at the Danish Immigrant Museum in Elk Horn, Iowa.

She enjoyed needlework, knitting, baking, and decorating in the traditional Danish way. She loved to garden and won “Best of Show” at the county fair with her flowers. She also enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.

Signe died at the Lakeside Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska on Thursday, October 30, 2014 having attained the age of ninety-five years, ten months, and fourteen days. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Moller, one brother Magnus, one sister Kristine, and son-in-law Stephen Morrow.

She is survived by her son Kjeld Madsen and his wife Judy of Tallahassee, Florida; daughter Elsebeth Morrow of Omaha, Nebraska; grandchildren: Heather Savage of Knoxville, Tennessee, Eric Madsen of Sterling, Virginia, Jamie Morrow of Naperville, Illinois, and Andrea Morrow of Denver, Colorado; seven great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; other family members and friends.
