Steven Jon Mueller, son of Dr. Kenneth and Pauline (Sasse) Mueller, was born on January 15, 1958, in Harlan, Iowa. He graduated from Harlan Community High School and continued his education at Iowa State University where he earned a degree in chemical engineering.
After college, Steve began working with Monsanto Corporation in St. Louis, Missouri. While working at Monsanto, Steve completed his MBA degree with an emphasis in marketing. He was later transferred to Minnesota and while there met Deanna Bates. He later proposed to Deanna in front of 3,000 people at the Des Moines Symphony. The couple was married on September 23, 1995, in Des Moines. After their wedding, Steve and Deanna moved to St. Louis, Missouri, where Steve continued to work with Monsanto.
For the past twelve years, he has worked as a project manager with Novus International (previously a part of Monsanto). He headed up numerous projects that involved making our world food supply safer, healthier, and more abundant.
Steve loved the outdoors and could often be found on the golf course or playing tennis. He also enjoyed spending time with Deanna going to their local outdoor theater, riding bicycles, and bird watching in their backyard. They also enjoyed traveling which they continued to do even when Steve became ill. Steve was very loving and could make any situation romantic. He loved to have picnics with Deanna; he didnt care where they had their picnic, as long as they were together. Steve cherished spending time with his family and friends, especially with his nieces and nephews: Elizabeth, Karen, Miranda, Meghan, Chris, Nicki, Michael, and Patrick Steven.
In 2005, Steve was diagnosed with multiple myeloma (a cancer of the bone marrow). He remained positive throughout his cancer journey, appreciating the blessings he experienced during this time. Steve made a tremendous difference for the others suffering with cancer with his positive attitude, participation in research and by serving with his wife, Deanna, on a ground breaking patient and family advisory council.
Steve departed on Thursday, March 12, 2009, having attained the age of fifty-one years, one month, and twenty-five days. He is preceded in death by his father Kenneth.
He is survived by his wife Deanna of Ballwin, Missouri; his mother Pauline Mueller of Harlan, Iowa; his siblings: Paula and her husband Jerry Wiebel of Ames, Iowa; Dave Mueller and his wife Nancy of Kansas City, Missouri; Kathy and her husband Mark Swanson of St. Louis, Missouri; Diane and her husband Todd Long of Phoenix, Arizona; nieces; nephews; other family members and many friends.
